How do I…

Measure a distance

Click points on the drawing and read the distance between them at the sheet's scale.

Where to find it: Palette (left edge) › Plan tools › Measure

  1. Open Palette, choose the Plan tools tab, then Measure.
  2. Click the first point, then each next one. Every leg shows its length on the drawing, and the Total runs to the pointer. With Smart alignment on in the bottom toolbar, a point dropped near an icon or the loose end of a conduit lands exactly on it; hidden ones are skipped.
  3. Double-click, press Enter or choose Done to finish. Backspace or Delete takes the last point back. Clear or Escape starts over, and Escape again, or the ×, puts the tool down.

On an iPad or a phone, tap the points, then Done. After Done, the next click starts a new measurement.

Lengths follow your workspace's unit system: feet and inches to the whole inch, or metres to the centimetre. They are read at the sheet's scale, so a sheet without one says Set the scale on this sheet first, with Set scale beside it for anyone who can edit; see set the scale. The points must lie on a blueprint that has a scale — otherwise it says Measure on a blueprint with a scale — and on one scale where a sheet's blueprints differ: These points are on blueprints at different scales.

A measurement is only on your screen. It is not saved, printed or undone, and it goes when you choose another tool. You can measure in a project you can only view.
