How do I…

Place an outlet

Show the electrician where each outlet goes, what kind it is and how high, on the wall, the floor or the ceiling.

Where to find it: Palette › Equipment › Power; for one already placed, select it › Properties

Outlets are drawn the way an electrical drawing draws them, so the electrician reads them at a glance: a circle with two lines running from the wall through it. They are numbered O-1, O-2 and so on, and the label says what kind it is: O/GFI-1 is a GFCI outlet, O/DED-1 one on a dedicated circuit. They are for showing where power is needed; they carry no cables and are never part of a circuit.

  1. Place it from Power in the palette. Each kind is its own tile: Outlet, Quad, Switched, GFCI, Weatherproof, Dedicated, 240 V or USB. A TV's outlet is a plain Outlet.
  2. Turn it so its two lines meet the wall it is on.
  3. To change one, select it and use Properties:
    • Kind: pick another kind, if the wrong one went in. Its ⋯ › Replace… does the same from the palette.
    • Mounting: Wall, Floor (drawn inside a square) or Ceiling (drawn inside a dashed circle).
    • Select several outlets to change their Kind, Mounting or Height together; where they differ it reads Mixed.
  4. For a wall outlet, set Height under Placement: to the middle of its box. It starts at 15 in (0.3 m in Europe).

Quad and Switched show in the drawing (a # and half the circle filled); the other kinds show in the label: GFI, WP, DED, 240V or USB. Each label is counted on its own, so a kind that changes the label (O-1 to O/GFI-1) gives the outlet a new number; Quad and Switched keep it. A search for its kind finds it, and the equipment list lists every kind on a row of its own.
