How do I…

Select a mark, or marks and devices together

Click any mark you can see to select it, and move or delete marks and devices as one selection.

Where to find it: bottom toolbar › Select or Pan › click the mark on the sheet

If you can see it, you can click it. A mark selects the way a device does, and you do not open its session first.

One mark

  1. Choose Select or Pan on the bottom toolbar.
  2. Click the mark. A dashed outline shows it is selected, its session becomes the one you are working in, and the drawing tools appear at the foot of the screen with its colour and thickness ready; see Style a mark.
  3. Drag it to move it, press the arrow keys to nudge it, or Delete to remove it. With Select you can drag a mark without clicking it first; with Pan click it, then drag.

A Line, Arrow, Rectangle or Circle shows square handles: drag one to reshape it. Text and Note show the same handles, and dragging one scales the words. Press selected text a second time to retype it.

Clicking a device keeps the session you are working in: it only decides where the next mark is kept. Either way its row shows itself, in Annotations or Equipment — or that tab flashes when the panel is off screen. Nothing opens by itself.

Where a click lands

A mark is clicked wherever it is drawn, and a fill is part of the shape: a filled rectangle, cloud or callout — tinted or solid, at any Opacity — takes the click anywhere inside it, and so does a note's card. With no fill, only the outline is clicked, leaving the devices inside it clickable.

So a filled shape drawn round a room takes the clicks inside it. To reach the devices under it, send it to the back or right-click to name what is there.

Pen and Highlighter strokes take the click on the ink, and a thin line has room round it for a finger. Where two things sit on one spot, whatever is on top of the stack takes the click.

Marks and devices together

Drag a box with Select — or hold Shift with Pan — and it takes every device and every mark it touches, from any session. Shift and click adds one or takes it out, and ⌘A selects everything on screen. Properties shows how many are selected.

Drag any one of them and the whole selection moves; the arrow keys nudge it. Copy, Duplicate and Delete selected (the ⋯ in Properties) work on all of it, and one undo puts all of it back.

When a delete would take marks from more than one annotation, a message first says how many of each: Delete selection goes ahead, Cancel keeps everything. Deleting inside one annotation asks nothing.

What cannot be selected

Anything you cannot see: a session whose eye is closed, a sheet row hidden inside one, marks a saved view hides, devices of a hidden system or outside the work-status filter, and anything on another sheet. A box or ⌘A never reaches them.

Anything locked: it stays visible, and a click, a box or ⌘A goes past it. See Lock a group.

The compass and scale bar are selected alone, never in a selection. If you can only view the project, you can select marks and devices to read them, and nothing moves.

While an icon is being placed, a click goes through marks to the sheet, so a device can go on top of a drawn line.

With a drawing tool in hand, click a mark to pick it up and drag to keep drawing over it. Devices ignore the pen. See Add an annotation.
