How do I…

Renumber by position

Number every icon again by where it stands, sheet by sheet and left to right.

Where to find it: Properties (nothing selected) › Project › Numbering › Renumber… › By position

Numbers count in the order icons were placed, so after a few rounds of changes SP-7 can sit between SP-2 and SP-3, or on another floor. To put them in reading order:

  1. Click an empty spot so nothing is selected, and open Properties › Project.
  2. Under Numbering choose Renumber…, then By position. When the numbers already follow position it is greyed out, and says so.
  3. Confirm with Renumber. Every icon is numbered again sheet by sheet, in the order of the sheets list, and left to right on each sheet. Icons lined up one above the other count from the top.

Connected icons stay together. Each set below is numbered in one go, at the place where the count reaches the icon the set starts from, before the count moves on:

  • A 70V or 100V line starts from the speaker its cable enters, the one a conduit reaches, else the first placed, and runs along its chain. A loose speaker that stands left of that entry speaker is numbered before the whole line, even when it stands between the line's speakers.
  • A zone of speakers joined by connection lines starts from its leftmost speaker, left to right.
  • The keypads on one link start from the leftmost, left to right.
  • A gang box starts from its first gang, in the order of its gangs.

Each icon type keeps its own count, and so do stereo and 70V speakers: SP-1, SP/ST-1 and SP/70V-1 each start from 1. A pair is counted where its left-hand speaker stands. Cable IDs take their icon's new number; the number after the dot stays.

An icon placed, copied or duplicated afterwards takes the next number at the end of its count until you renumber again. While the project's numbers are unlocked, renumbering is one edit: no revision is saved, and undo puts the previous numbers back in one step.

While they are locked, confirm with Renumber & save revision instead. Labels change, so the crew needs a new print, and a revision is saved. The revision holds the new numbers, so undo no longer changes them; to change them again, renumber again. Earlier versions and the share link keep their old numbers. To close gaps without changing the order, close numbering gaps. To choose the order of one type yourself, renumber in the order you click.
