How do I…

Write text on a sheet

Type a label straight onto the drawing, in the size it will print at.

Where to find it: Annotations (left edge) › open one › Text

  1. Open an annotation session and choose Text.
  2. Click where the words should start. A box opens there, on the sheet, in the colour and size they will print at — not in a window over the drawing.
  3. Type. Enter starts a new row. Nothing wraps on its own: a drawing has no column to wrap into, and a line that wrapped on screen would not break the same way on paper.
  4. Click anywhere else to keep it. Escape throws it away, and so does leaving it empty.

Writing one piece of text is a finished job, so the tool goes back to selecting afterwards. Choose Text again for the next one — otherwise the click that closed one box would open another, empty, wherever you happened to click.

To change words already on the sheet, click them once to pick them up and again to open the box, with the caret at the end. This works with a drawing tool still in hand — you do not have to put the pen down to fix a typo. Emptying the box removes the text, because words that are not there paint nothing and an invisible mark is worse than none.

Size

Text size sits in the strip beside the tools, where a stroke has its Thickness. It is the height of a row on the sheet, so it scales with the drawing, not with the screen: zooming in does not make the text bigger relative to the plan.

Left alone it matches a device label on that sheet, which is what it usually sits beside. Change it and every text you write afterwards uses the new size, until you change it again.

To resize words already written, click them once: square handles appear at the corners of the text, the same ones a rectangle gets. Drag one and the text scales — it is the font size that changes, so the words keep their shape — about the corner opposite the one you are holding, which stays put. Handles stop at the edge of the sheet. The size you finish on is the size the next piece of text starts at, exactly as if you had moved the slider.

Colour and Opacity work the same way as they do for any other mark. A text mark carries no Line style and no Thickness; both are greyed while you are writing.

Text or a note

Text is bare words on the drawing. A note is the same words on a card — a coloured box with a frame and a glyph, sized to what you type. It is typed on the sheet exactly as text is, takes the same size and the same corner handles, and adds a Card colour, a Frame colour and an Icon; see Style a mark. Use text for a dimension, a room name or a short instruction that belongs in the drawing; use a note for a remark about the drawing.

Text goes into everything the session goes into: what you issue, and a share link. Hiding the session hides it.
