How do I…
Place a device
Pick an icon in the Palette and click on the sheet where the device goes.
Where to find it: open the project › Palette (left edge) › Equipment
- Open Palette on the left edge. The Equipment tab lists icons by system.
- Find the icon: type in Search icons…, which stays at the top while the list scrolls, or look in a system's section; each has the small picture its group also has in Equipment. Bigger sections are split into parts with a little space between them, such as fixtures, LED and landscape lights in Lighting (see place a light fixture); while you search, matches show without them.
- Click the icon. Each variant, such as a dome or bullet camera, is a tile of its own. A Placing bar with a moving edge at the bottom shows what you are placing.
- Click on the sheet. The device appears with the next number, such as CAM-3.
- Keep clicking to place more, or choose Done.
You can pan or zoom to another included sheet in any View and place there directly. That click—or lift of your finger—activates the sheet and places the icon without changing your zoom or dropping your palette choice. If that View hides the device’s system or its To do status, the editor asks you to show it before placing. Dimmed, excluded sheets cannot receive devices.
On a tablet, tap the sheet where the device goes. On the active sheet, a faint preview of the icon follows your finger while it is on the glass, so you can slide to line it up; the device lands where you lift. Between taps there is no preview.
Hold Option (Alt) as you click to place a pointer first: its tip marks the spot, and the icon goes beside it. The tip stays put when you move icons, even a gang box or a display with its soundbar; drag the tip to move it.
With the device selected, Properties shows its settings; see change a device's details.
Speakers, subwoofers and soundbars are placed as the Passive / Powered switch at the top of Speakers says; see set a speaker to powered or 70V. Shades, double shades and draperies are drawn end to end, with Shift for level, plumb and 15° steps; see draw a shade or drapery. They are placed as the Wired / Wireless switch at the top of Window treatments says; see set a shade to wireless. Lighting control lists wired and wireless lighting control apart, each with its own keypad; see place a keypad, dimmer or switch.
Name an Other or a Relay in place an Other or a Relay.
For cabling, Infrastructure has the In-wall enclosure beside the rack, Comfort has the Thermostat hub (its Quantity is how many thermostats it holds), Speakers has the Volume control, and Wiring has the cable types of your workspace's standard under Network, Speaker, Control & alarm, Fire alarm, Video & coax and Fiber — Cat6 shielded, Cat6A shielded and 12/4 among the US ones, mm² speaker cable up to 4×4 mm², 75Ω coax, YTDY, KNX and the YnTKSYekw and HDGs fire alarm cables among the European. Which cables each icon starts with is set in your cabling defaults.
Handy while placing: arrow keys move a selected device one unit, Shift and the arrows ten units, and Option (Alt) with the arrows moves only its label and pins it to that side. Labels you leave alone move out of each other's way on their own; see change a device's details. The next device clicks into the same gap as the ones before it; see line up and space devices evenly. All shortcuts are in keyboard shortcuts.
