How do I…
Style a mark
Colour, thickness, line style, ends and fill — before you draw, or after.
Where to find it: click a mark, or Annotations (left edge) › open one › the drawing tools and the row above
The settings sit in two places. Colour, Thickness, Line style and Opacity are in the drawing bar itself — every mark drawn with a stroke has all four, and words grey the ones they do not use. Ends, Sides, Fill, Words and a note's Card colour, Frame colour and Icon belong to some marks and not others, so they appear on a row of their own above the bar, and only when the mark in hand carries them.
They work the same whether or not anything is selected: with nothing selected they set what the next mark will be drawn with; with a mark selected they change that mark and become the setting for the next one too. A line drawn solid can be made dashed afterwards, and the next one is dashed as well.
The controls
Colour offers the eight a session hands out, and a custom picker under them. A colour that would vanish into what it is drawn on is rescued when it is drawn; see Colours that print.
Thickness is the weight of the stroke: 0.5, 0.75, then 1 to 32. It starts at 1. On words — Text, a Note, a Keyed note — it becomes Text size, 8 to 200, in the sheet's units; a note's card and glyph grow with it.
Line style is solid, Dashed, Dotted, Centre line, Phantom line, Double, Wavy or Cloud. Double and Wavy go on a Line or an Arrow only; Cloud scallops any shape or pen line (Cloud an area).
Ends puts an Arrow, a Dot, a Bar or Nothing on a line, and Sides puts it on one end or both.
Words puts words beside a mark already drawn with a line, or numbers it as a keyed note; see Cloud an area.
Fill washes a shape that closes — a Rectangle, Circle, Triangle, Star, Free shape, Cloud or Callout — in the mark's own colour. A Tint lets the drawing show through it; Solid covers what is underneath. A line, an arrow and a pen stroke have no inside, so the control greys.
Card colour is the card a Note is written on and Frame colour is the line around it. Left alone they are the pale card and a frame in the mark's own Colour, which is the colour of the words. The frame takes the Line style too, so a note can be ringed with a dashed or a dotted border.
Icon is the glyph on the card: Note, Information, Warning, Done, Flag, Place, Power, Photo, Tool — or No icon.
Opacity fades the whole mark, outline and fill together.
The sliders save when you let go, as one Undo step.
What each tool carries
A Note and a Text mark are words: no thickness of stroke, no ends, no fill. Both carry a size instead, both are typed straight onto the sheet, and both are scaled by dragging a corner of what is selected. A note adds the card, the frame and the glyph on top of that.
A Tapered arrow is one solid shape rather than a line with a head on it, so it has no line to dash and no ends to choose — but Thickness still sets its size.
Highlighter keeps its own thick, faded stroke; your own thickness and opacity come back when you leave it.
