How do I…
Lock numbers
Lock a project's numbers before labels go on so they stay put, leave them unlocked while drafting so they close up on their own, and unlock them again.
Where to find it: open the project › Properties (nothing selected) › Project › Numbering › Lock numbers
One switch decides whether a project's numbers can still move. It covers device numbers, Cable IDs and keyed note numbers together.
When to lock
Leave it off while you draft, such as during pre-wire planning: devices come and go, and the numbers tidy themselves. Turn it on before anyone labels cables or devices, so the labels keep matching the drawing.
Unlocked
Every new project starts unlocked. Every number closes up whenever something is deleted, on screen and in every new print: delete SP-5 and SP-6 becomes SP-5. Cable IDs and keyed-note numbers close up too.
- Save, Share, the PDF and the CSV never ask anything about numbering.
- Close numbering gaps is not shown, because there are never gaps.
- Renumber cables is not offered; Cable IDs close up on their own.
- Renumber by position and click in order are one edit and one undo step, with no revision.
Locked
Numbers stay as they are. A new device takes the next number after the highest ever used. A deleted number is kept in brackets on a neighbour, such as SP-4 (5, 6), and the sheet's legend explains it.
- Deleting a numbered icon opens Delete numbered icons. Keep existing numbers keeps the gap and saves nothing; Close numbering gaps renumbers those types and saves a revision. See copy, duplicate or delete devices.
- Close numbering gaps appears under Numbering for every type at once; see close numbering gaps.
- Renumbering by position or in click order saves a revision, and warns that labels change.
- Renumber cables starts Cable IDs afresh in a new version, and Renumber notes gives notes not issued yet the numbers no version issued; see add keyed notes.
Lock the numbers
Save major locks them for you: saving v2.0, v3.0 and so on locks numbers that are unlocked, and says so. The first version, v1.0, never does. A revision such as v2.1 leaves the switch as it is, so numbers you unlock at v2.1 stay unlocked through v2.15 until the next major version.
To lock them yourself:
- Click an empty spot so nothing is selected, and open Properties › Project.
- Under Numbering, turn on Lock numbers. The line under it says which state the project is in.
- Confirm with Lock numbers. A revision named "Numbers locked" is saved.
Unlock them
Turn Lock numbers off and confirm with Unlock & close gaps. Every device number, Cable ID and note number closes up at once, and a revision named "Numbers unlocked" is saved. Labels already on cables may no longer match.
Owners and Editors can lock or unlock at any time, as often as needed. Earlier versions and share links never change.
A project that already had a saved version before this switch existed starts locked, so nothing renumbers on its own. If nothing is labelled yet, unlock it.
